Zinc oxide: Any of the zinc oxide ointments that are used for diaper rash are a nice trick. They sooth the skin and coat it to protect it from further irritation from the stool. Other options include a cortisone ointment, but this can thin the skin, ultimately leading to it being more fragile and vulnerable to irritation.
