Yes: When a child with asthma who has been sick and on antibiotics develops croup (or any important new symptom) it's wise to get back in touch with the doctor to evaluate. Croup tends to get worse as the evening progresses. The right treatment often prevents breathing problems. Waiting sometimes results in serious difficulty breathing.

If a barky cough: Croup and asthma are different problems, but can happen in the same child. A child can stay on asthma meds during croup (which is viral usually) if he gets asthma symptoms with viral illnesses. A parent can contact the doctor to see if the child needs to be seen. If the croup is more than slight, or if there was a prior croup illness needing medications, the dr. Likely will want to see the child.

Of course!: A child with known asthma should be monitored for flares of their asthma, which commonly occur after either viral or bacterial infections. The low fever suggests a viral infection, but if his albuterol doesn't stop the cough, you should take him to his doctor. "retractions", or a pulling-in of the skin between the ribs or above the collar bone while breathing, is a warning sign; take him to the er.

Probably not: 4 year olds are exposed to many viruses. Just because he finished one illness, he is exposed to many children and viruses and they are going around. He is probably just a normal 4 year old who picked up another virus. A virus is not related to a bacterial illness and and doe not suggest something wrong with him.

See MD: The problem with "croup" is it may interfere with your ability to detect wheezing. With underlying asthma, there's an increased risk of worse wheezing with any infection. You need an "asthma action plan" from your pediatrician which should tell you what you can manage alone and when you need to increase meds or seek other help. Croup sounds scarier than it is but undertreated asthma is dangerous.

Sure: Always be concerned when your child is sick but i think what you are asking is , is it abnormal for a 4 year old with asthma who just had a bacterial infection to get a virus so close? No a 4 year old is exposed often to many germs and when they go around they pick them up. The asthma just makes respiratory illnesses harder for your child than a child without asthma.
