Low but not zero: The chances of conceiving after having intercourse during menses are low but not zero. Sperm can be hearty, and if a sperm lives until the time of ovulation, it may in fact fertilize an egg. Also, over the 22 years of my career, i've seen patients come in to be tested "during their period" and in fact it wasn't a period at all (and some were actually ovulating while bleeding)! hope this helps.

Very low*: If it is truly during the beginning of one's menstrual cycle, then it is unlikely to get pregnant. The reason this is not definitive is because it is not uncommon for women to either have irregular periods or mistakenly attribute vaginal bleeding with the beginning of their menstrual cycle. Thus, if trying to avoid pregnancy, should still use contraception (e.g. Condoms) even with 'period'.
