See your dentist: Trauma to a tooth will damage the tooth itself, the bone that supports it, and/or the blood vessels that feed the tooth. If the blood supply is damaged the cells in the root canal will also die--including the blood cells. The red color of the blood will change to brown/black and discolor the tooth. In most cases, root canal treatment and internal whitening or a crown will fix the color.

It can be treated: Tooth trauma (that caused chipping) can sometimes lead to death of tooth nerve, which may result in darkening of tooth. Root canal therapy can remove dead nerve. Tooth can be whitened from within with "internal bleaching" once root canal done. Tooth can be repaired with bonding or, if necessary, with a crown. Be sure your dentist is skilled at esthetic dentistry to assure a good outcome.

Most likely: The first question concerns the vitality of the tooth. Did it already have rct or else it probably needs to be done.Second, what is the health of the rest of the tooth, root, and supporting bone & gums? Depending upon the answers, there would most likely be several methods to restore the tooth back to strength, health, & be esthetically pleasing. See a dentist for evaluation and treatment options.

Crown: If you had an injury to your tooth, the reason it got discolored is because of the damage to the nerve of the tooth due to the injury. So basically the nerve is dead. So first, you will need a root canal, then to lighten the color, first you can try internal bleaching. In the event that it is not successful, then you can place a crown on that tooth where you can match the color to your other teeth.

Yes: If it turned dark that means it became necrotic. Nerve died...So it will need a root canal and a veneer or a crown.

It can be fixed: How did it chip? Trauma can cause the nerve to die. Many times when the entire tooth turns black it can either be due to decay or the nerve in the tooth has "died". The sooner you have it professionally evaluated the easier and less expensive it will be to fix. If you wait too long your only option may be extraction. Have it evaluated today. If the nerve is ok bonding may be your answer.

Root canal & crown: A tooth that turns dark after trauma means that the dental pulp (soft tissue) has been damaged and in an adult often doesn't have the ability to heal. The result will be the eventual death of that pulp and an abscess...resulting in pain and swelling. The treatment is to do a root canal which treats the infected pulp and a crown to restore the tooth to its natural shape, color and contour.

See your dentist: The treatment may depend on whether or not you have symptoms and what the x-rays show. The sooner any necessary treatment is provided the better in most circumstances. Early treatment may safe your tooth. Good luck.
