Couple points: The short answer is yes, it can. Could have looked suspicious but turned out to be nothing. This is not uncommon... Was likely what we call overlapping tissue. Having said that, sometimes things look so suspicious that when a biopsy comes back negative, we don't believe it and re-biopsy.

Need to check: Biopsies are done for various reasons. If it was done for suspicious calcifications, seen on mammography, the calcifications in question need to be present in the biopsy and gone from the breast on repeat mammogram. Sometimes, deeper cuts of the biopsy will show the calcifications. Many hospitals have a multidisciplinary committee to review these kinds of cases.
