Can be: First trimester can have a lot of potentially worrisome things--answer unfortunately depends on time--if resolves, then not likely a concern. If persists or worsens, should see OB or emergency department to be sure pregnancy in correct location.

Common: I would not say it's normal for sure, but i would say it's common. If the cramps are rare, not consistent, and not associated with bleeding or leakage of fluids, the most likely outcome will be a full-term healthy delivery. Being seen by your doctor about these issues is a good idea, though.
