Yes: Your thyroid gland is no longer working and you will need to take levothyroxine for the rest of your life....But it's cheap medication, so thats the good news. ......Go see your doctor and make sure he monitors your TSH levels.

Probably: The most common cause for hypothyroidism is autoimmune destruction of the thyroid gland (hashimoto's thyroiditis). This typically results in a permanently low thyroid, though in early disease one can have episodes of normal or even high thyroid levels. There are also temporary causes for hypothyroidism including recovering subacute thyroiditis, and postpartum thyroiditis.
