Can you walk?: If you can walk on it 99% chance it is not broken and is likely a sprained ankle. Follow the rice rule....Rest, ice, compression and elevation. You can also add in an NSAID like aleve (naproxen) to help. It should get better in time, bracing, pt and exercises will help it. If you cannot bear weight at all or feel bones shifting you need to get to a doc for an xray.

RICE: Rice means rest, ice, elevation, and compression. Place ice 15-20 min on and 15-20 min off the area. Elevate the ankle above heart level. An ankle brace may be needed, and crutches may be needed at first. Anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen help with pain. If you can not bear weight on the ankle it should be checked by a physician.
