Depends on cause: If due to trauma, likely will be unchanged for years. If due to a genetic form of alzheimer's. Will get worse steadily. If due to b-12 def or alcohol/nutritional causes, might gradually improve with b-12 shots, or thiamine supplementation. If due to medication side effect, switch to a different med. See a neurologist or psychiatrist for a more thorough analysis.

It depends: Short term memory loss can be caused by several conditions. Some of them are reversible, e.g., vitamin B12 deficiency, and some are not. Short term memory loss could be the first symptom of alzheimer's disease that would cause progressive loss of independence. You need to be examined by a physician to find out what might be the cause of your memory loss.
