Dietary change: Look at eatingacademy.Com and search youtube videos on richard lustig, md, mary vernon, md and steven phinney. I think a low-carbohydrate diet, high fat and moderate protein diet will help you lose weight. I encourage you to do your research and watch these videos: http://eatingacademy.Com/videos-peter-likes. Also, i recommend the book, "why we get fat" by gary taubes.

Weight loss surgery: Two answers: first, bariatric surgery is safer than its ever been. It is safer than heart operations, safer than hip operations. The death rate today for a gastric bypass is 1 in 900. 1 in 2000 for a lap band. But, at your height and weight, your bmi is 34.3 and you wouldn't qualify for the surgical procedures. I am sorry. Today, a bmi > 35 with medical complications of obesity is required.
