For most people, the most common cause of blood in the stool is caused by hemorrhoids or anal fissures. However, we take it seriously because colon and rectal cancers can also cause blood in the stool. I tell my patients, especially if they're over 50 or have a strong family history of colon cancer to get it checked by a doctor just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!
