Antibiotics: They are both generally considered beta lactam antibiotics. However, Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a penicillin and Cefdinir is considered to be a cephalosporin. While the drugs have some similarities in antibacterial coverage, they also do have differences. It is important to be guided in antibiotic selection by the results of culture and sensitivity reports.

Different drug class: Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is an old penicillin analog (amoxicillin) combined with a relatively new enzyme inhibitor ( clavulanate). Cefidinr is a third generation cephalosporin. Bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics thru widespread use & evolutionary pressure on bacterial reproduction new strategies have emerged for treatment. Clavulanate inhibits an enzyme that some bacteria use to resist penicillin.
