Skin scraping: A scraping can typicaly be done in your doctors office and examined under a microscope. For difficult cases sometimes a small biopsy can be taken and sent to a pathologist for staining and more close examination. Scalp fungi (or involving any hair) can typically require medicine by mouth (not shampoos, lotions, etc) to clear up completely.

Scrape n look: Microscopic look at scalp skin scrapings will show fungus or lack there of. Because the appearance is fairly classic, a dermatologist may treated without scraping it.
