Need Xray & exam: Most likely lumbar sprain but possibly herniated disc or stenosis or other injury especially if he is in the military. He will need to see doc for clinical evaluation as well as xray and possibly MRI depending on findings. www.chrisohmd.com.

Depends on cause: Many times muscle spasms can be the reason where ice followed by heat with stretching can help. Anti-inflammatory meds, muscle relaxants can help. Physical therapy will frequently be of assistance. He needs to get an examination to make sure there isn't something else worse going on since disc issues can also be underlying trigger.
