How many ESI?: If you only had one esi, but it worked for a couple of days, you may consider having another injection. Sometimes a series of injections (up to 3) is necessary to provide adequate pain relief. This is an option if you are reluctant to pursue surgery. Depending on the size of the disc herniation, surgery may ultimately be the best option. Consult with a neurosurgeon. Good luck!

Surgery: If you have completed a proper work-up and have failed a reasonable period of conservative care ( at least 6-8 weeks ) and you are in significant pain that prevents you from doing your normal activities, then surgery is an option to discuss with your doctor. Check out spine-health.Com.

Non-surg back option: Physical therapy can benefit even long-term degenerative disc disease sufferers, aimed at muscle relaxation then equilibration, opening intervertebral disc spaces for discs to return to their normal shape, and physical pain relief. Tens units & licensed massage therapy help pain without side effects. Swimming helps strengthen back muscles without jarring or grinding down discs. Good luck!

Repeat Injection: Epidural injections have a variable relief pattern and it really depends on the steroid used and location of pathology. Typically epidural injections work best if placed next to or on top of the level of pathology. Sometimes these injections need to be repeated for sustained relief. Epidural injections if they work can provide from weeks to months of relief. Speak with your doctor re: options.
