Gynecomastia: Gynecomastia is benign enlargement of breast tissue in males. Causes include normal adolescent development (50% of all males), metabolic disorders, tumors, or from medication side effects. Also, due to normal aging decreases in testosterone, older males can also develop this condition. The good news is, 80% of young males will outgrow this condition. Seek Consultation.: In-person consultation with your family practitioner and/or plastic surgeon is a good place to start. Accurate history and physical examination is important. Eliminating “causes” of gynecomastia is also important. Surgical treatment usually involves partial excision of the glandular tissue plus/minus liposuction surgery. Again, much of what is recommended will depend on specific physical exam.
