Regulates body rythm: The autonomic nervous system regulates various natural rhythms of the body. There are 2 components to the autonomic nervous system that counterbalance each other: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The vagus nerve is the major nerve of the parasympathetic system. It slows the heart rate and stimulates bowel activity (which will impact ibs).
