Sunblock moisturizer: Dark tan is a natural color. Many people use over-the-counter moisturizers that contain sunscreen. Avoiding exposure to the sun will let skin lighten up. A person should take extra vitamin d to make up for not getting vitamin d from the sun. Although having tanned skin from sun exposure is not a medical illness, there are a few uncommon hormonal medical conditions that can cause skin darkening.

What type treatment: Please ask about what type of treatment. Many dermatology procedures are the same for all skin types, but if you are asking about laser or chemical peels, skin type is very important. You will want to seek a dermatologist that has experience with skin of color as treatments can be tricky and have a higher risk of scarring if not done correctly (or even if correct procedures are followed).

Key = Protection: First and foremost you should protect your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays (ie the sun, tanning booths). Spf creams that are 15+ in addition to sun protective clothing (hats, sunglasses) are the mainstay of protection. Maintaining a healthy diet, good hydration, and avoiding smoking will also help. A daily skin care regimen with anti-oxidants and gentle cleansers can go a long way as well.
