Diet more important: Eat foods that are nutrient dense (like meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, low starch vegatables and water) avoid foods that are not nutrient dense (like starches and sugars, including fruit) nutrient dense foods will increase your basal metabolic rate. On the other hand, starches and sugars impair thyroid metabolism via affects on your liver (which helps activate thyroid hormone).

Diet more important: First, control portion size. It's also important to eat a diet that is low in sugars, starches, and grains. Get plenty of vegetables. Fruit should be kept low if you are quite overweight and/or have a lot of trouble shedding weight. A mediterranean diet modified by reducing or removing grains and fruits is a good basic idea for healthy living and/or weight loss.
