A member asked:

What is the name of the thing doctors put inside u to open your cervics when you in labor or it's to start the contractions nd da doctors take it out?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: Probably not used when you're in labor, because the cervix will dilate on it's own in labor . However to start the dilatation process, sometimes a Foley catheter can be used. Also, certain meds are used to start the cervical "ripening" process (ie. Cytotec (misoprostol) ). Another thing that can be used is laminaria --however, this is used typically in non-viable pregnancies.
