Need effective meds: Sorry you have these most terrible headaches for which typical pain medication - even narcotics, are completely ineffective. Good news is the right medications (sumatriptan, oxygen, Lidocaine in the nose) rapidly turn a cluster headache off once it starts, and that many strategies for prevention of headaches are also successful. Key is accurate diagnosis + compassionate treatment by an expert md.

Make sure of dx: If your headaches are truly cluster headaches, these can be very disabling and difficult to treat. You should see a headache neurologist, but the treatments include sumatriptan injection, oxygen, lithium. Many times reading online may suggest that a headache is cluster, but the most common headache cause is migraine.

Cluster Headache: is the most painful of all the primary headache disorders. Management of a cluster headache can be abortive or prophylactic. Sometimes, both methods are indicated in the same patient. An effective abortive treatment uses oxygen at a flow rate of 7-10 liters per minute. The treatment of choice for the prevention of both episodic and chronic cluster headache is verapamil.

Rx for cluster HAs: Unlike other kinds of headaches, cluster headaches may improve by inhaling enriched oxygen, such as that available in a hospital or emergency room. They may also be treated with triptan medicines, NSAIDs, and sometimes they can be prevented with the use of verapamil or carbamazepine.
