Not really: Methotrexate has been studied. The results are not conclusive. The newer drugs such as Actemra (tocilizumab) are currently being studied.

Yes, but...: The problem with alternate medications (sometimes called "steroid-sparing" drugs) is that they tend to be slow in onset. It is very important with temporal arteritis to get control of the disease immediately, and only steroids will do this job. Once the disease is under control, other drugs may help you get off steroids sooner.
