Seek help soon: Depression is never normal. For some, withdrawing from opiates is cause for celebration. But if pain persists, it can be very discouraging and lead to depression. See a pain specialist if still in pain. Severe depression can be life-threatening; see a mental health professional for therapy and/or medications. Don't wait for it to go away on its own. Good luck!

Varies: Not only is depression common after withdrawal, it is the expected norm. I'm sure you've heard this before, but support groups do help; support from close friends helps more. This won't be easy for you, but if you care about him, do every thing you can to prevent relapse. Many try medications like Prozac (fluoxetine) to get through the initial phase. An addiction doctor should be involved.
