Bipolar: Lithium is one of many mood stabilizers used to treat bipolar do. Other possibilities include depakote, lamictal, tegretol, trileptal, seroquel, abilify, (aripiprazole) etc.

Medication, yes: Medication is necessary to adequately treat bipolar (i or ii). Lithium was the first medication discovered to stabilize mood in bpd and it remains an excellent one. There are today many effective meds. However, we now know better how to match the medication to both the person and the pattern of symptoms.

Bipolar: If I am reading your question correctly, lithium is not necessarily at all the only medication for bipolar disorder. There are other mood stabilizers that work well, depending on the patient.
