Autoimmune disease: Some autoimmune diseases can cause inflammation within the central nervous sysyem. Depending upon the site of involvement, different symptoms can be experience. Disease such as multiple sclerosis can affect very small areas of the brain whereas diseases such as lupus (sle) can effect overall brain function. An expert in these problems would first try to rule out an autoimmune cause of symptoms.

Some, def. not all: Some patients with autoimmune disorders can have psychiatric symptoms (sometimes due to the autoimmune disorder, mostly not). Most people with psychiatric conditions don't have autoimmune disorder as cause. Classic example is underactive thyroid (or less common adrenal disease) manifesting with symptoms of depression. Sometimes people with autoimmune diseases are depressed due to the disease.

Autoimmune diseases: Data are increasing evidence of an autoimmune basis for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and plenty of other research showing an autoimmune role in autism. Autoimmune diseases can cause or mimic psychiatric disorders some of which themselves may be seen as primary autoimmune disorders as the field of psychoneuroimmunology continues to develop. www.jleukbio.org/content/92/5/959.
