Late symptom: As a sign of colon cancer, gas and bloating are late symptoms. An obstruction caused by a tumor could lead to bloating and the trapping of gas within the colon. If you have a family history of colon cancer, genetic polyp disorders or are concerned about your risk of colon cancer, talk to your doctor about scheduling a colon cancer screening exam.

Not in the beginning: If you are having excessive gas and worried it is cancer, that probably is not the case. However, colon cancer that is advanced can decrease the passage of stools, and lead to bloating, which is excessive gas. But probably not in the way you are thinking. If you mean you are passing a lot of smelly gas, unlikely it is because of cancer. But speak with you doc for a thorough history.
