Pain in the Neck: Neck pain and stiffness can result from improper alignment and positioning of your cervical spine (neck vertebra) at night. A simple rule of thumb is to select a comfortable pillow that places your neck in a neutral position (i.e., no extreme bending or twisting). Since sleeping on your belly tends to promote excessive neck rotation and extension, sleeping on your back or sides is preferable.

Neck pain in AM: Morning pain and stiffness can be due to sleep habits that are not optimal. Most people use too tall pillow(s) and when the body sinks alittle deeper into the mattrass at night, the neck becomes flexed and feels stiff; a cold draft / fan in the bedroom can also make your neck feel stiff and achy. Use a thinner pillow and maybe a turtle neck for a few days and see if it helps!
