No simple answer: There are no strict criteria on when it is best to treat a chiari malformation. Generally, most pediatric surgeons will recommend treating symptomatic chiari malformation or those associated with syringomyelia.

Unlikely a problem: Many chiari malformations get discovered on imaging studies done for very different reason. If you have no clinical abnormalities at this point affecting upper spinal cord or base of brain, no reason to worry. If you are concerned, see a neurosurgeon, and get his/her opinion.
