A member asked:

What causes farts to smell really bad and having to pass gas often?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bacterial metabolism: Certain foods are metabolized in different ways by the normal bacteria that live in your colon. This metabolism permits further processing of the food to give you additional nutrients. The bacteria release different organic acids based on the food and the species of bacteria. These acids are released as a gas and have distinctive odors.
