Yes: Cold sores will go away with or without treatment in 10-14 days. Most over-the-counter treatments are pallative and deal more with the uncomfotrable symptoms than actually causing the cold sore to go away. Your dentist or md can also prescribe anti-virals that can help but are more effective the earlier you take them once symptoms arrive.

BETTER NOT TO USE IT: Campho-phenique is an antiseptic, local anesthetic, germicide and parasiticide not an anti-viral ointment. Sore will heal without treatment (and if not irritated/injured) in roughly 10-14 days--longer if injured. Pain is a useful symptom of inflammation--it makes you stop using/touching the affected part.
