Depends: Depends on cause and how it is triggered and/or exacerbated. Acid reflux pain/"heart burn" can cause pain, esophageal spasm can cause pain.... And many other things can cause pain in the chest beyond just the esophagus. Most importantly, someone should discuss symptoms and history with their family physician to get appropriate evaluation, referral and accurate diagnosis to guide treatment.
