A member asked:

What does it mean if you have low "free testoserone" but normal overall testosterone?

Free testosterone: Free testosterone refers to the circulating testosterone not bound to shbg (sex hormone binding globulin). This is the testosterone that is actually available to do the work of testosterone in your body. The more shbg you have the less testosterone you have available. Many conditions such as liver and thyroid disease cause shbg levels to rise, making you feel like you have low testosterone.

Not enough info: The standard is to check a morning total testosterone level and a some other labs {ie: shbg}. In theory, the best time to check the total testosterone level is 8am because this is the theoretic peak. If your peak total testoserone is less than 300 ng/dl and your shgb is normal, then you may carry the diagnosis of hypogonadism. If you do have an irregualr shbg, then go with the bioavailable.
