Ankle: Many things can cause your problem. Sometimes lesion inside of the ankle joint can cause swelling and pain. Malalignment of your lower extremities can also cause ankle pain. During the night, you have more swelling accumulated inside of your ankle because your body weight is off. I would encourage you to see a doctor that can check your legs alignment and check for lesions inside your ankles.

Venous Stasis: Blood moves through your leg veins when you work your calf muscles. Immobility does not allow the muscles to push the blood up to the heart. Elevating your legs above your heart should help.
