How do you know if you have a yeast infection?

15 doctors weighed in across 17 answers

Symptoms & tests: I am not sure what location is of concern. In women, vaginal yeast infection is by far the most common one. Usually, they complain of curdy, discharge with or without associated burning. Frequently, they may have no symptoms. Using KOH preparation or a new test called affirm may confirm the presence of vaginal yeast. Gi yeast may be revealed at the time of egd/colonoscopy. Thrush is visible yeast.

Depends on details: Yeast is a life form, and there are many kinds. Some live with humans, as a normal part of us. If these "friends" of ours get to be more than desired, we call it a yeast overgrowth... such as when seen in the mouth, on the skin, in the vagina, etc... If they get even more overgrown, or if any yeast go where they are not supposed to live, we call them infections... which can worsen if untreated.

Burning, itching,,,: A yeast infection of the vagina or vulva may cause severe itching, burning, soreness, irritation, and a whitish or whitish-gray cottage cheese-like discharge, often with a curd-like appearance. In the clinic, etc. Diagnosis is done with a scraping or swab of the area placed on a microscope slide, which is treated with KOH dissolving the cells and leaving the candida yeast cells.

Itching, irritation: The main symptoms of vaginal yeast infections are itching and irritation, sometimes with redness and swelling of the labia minor. There can be vaginal discharge, but usually not much -- typically thick and white, sometimes compared to cottage cheese. Strong odor or large amount of discharge suggest other infections, including STDs, but not yeast. See a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
