Could a deviated septum come back after surgery?

Deviated septum: Surgically corrected deviated septum does not recur. Nasal trauma may cause trauma to the septum causing it to fracture or become dislocated, leading to deviation and narrowing of the nasal airway.

Not likely: No, bc we remove the deviated portion of the septum during septoplasty. Usually, when people have had septoplasty (wihout rhinoplasty) and still can't breathe well, it bc the inferior turbinates weren't treated or the deviated portion wasn't appropriately removed the first time. Sometimes, after appropriately fixing the septum, people can have nasal valve collapse --> persistent nasal obstruction.

If done well, no: If you had surgery to improve your nasal breathing, then presumably you had your septum straightened and also your turbinates reduced in size in some way. Straightening the septum should be permanent. Reducing the turbinates might not be. If you start to develop congestion after the surgery it's possible the turbinates regrew. If you're told the septum is off it prob wasn't fixed fully at first.

Sometimes: Although rare, some people do have some relapse of their deviated septum. Sometimes a second operation will be advised.

Revision septoplasty: Revision rates in septoplasty are under 10% and depends on the surgeon and the method used. Be sure to have your nose evaluated by a board certified otolaryngologist.
