Exam/Vitals/Monitors: Observation of physical signs, measuring an array of vital sign and eeg monitoring all confirm comfort and loss of consciousness under general anesthesia. BP and pulse readings, breathing rate & oxygen consumption, co2 elimination and bis monitoring are all among these and are used routinely at accredited health care facilities. No worries!

Vital signs: If you are talking about general anesthesia, then we monitor blood pressure and heart rate. A rise in either usually indicates a need to deepen the anesthesia. If the patients vital signs do not respond to painful stimuli, it is generally assumed they are asleep. There also some brain wave monitors purport to measure level of consciousness.
