Ice and stretching: Decrease any running and jumping activities. Use a small heel lift, ice regularly, and start a gentle heel cord stretching program combined with eccentric calf exercises. Often helpful to sleep with splint that keeps ankle in neutral so heel cord does not contract.

Achilles Tendonitis: Achilles tendinitis which is stretching the tendon where it inserts on the heel. Try wearing a heel lift in your shoe or a slight heel to relax the tendon from its insertion. Ice, rest, topical irritants like icy hot or bengay can help too. If it doesn't get better visit your local podiatrist for further evaluation and treatment. Possible need to ankle brace, walking boot or physical therapy.

I do not agree...: With the current treatment for Achilles tendonitis, especially when long standing. If your symptoms are chronic, then ice therapy is not helpful after the acute phase, and only restricts circulation. Obviously medication is only temporary, and you have to repeat often. Many of my patients get better using hot foot soaks to increase circulation for healing, and the Doctors Reflex for pain relief.
