See below: Kava kava has been shown to have some relaxation effects. However it also has been associated with liver damage. It's impossible to say how much kava could be dangerous because 1) the cause of the liver damage is unclear & 2) the amount of kava in a given preparation is not standardized. It's recommended that kava only be used under a doctor's supervision.

Not regulated: Kava appeared on Consumer Report's most recent list of, "ingredients to always avoid." In addition to potential liver damage, research shows that it can impair driving, aggravate Parkinson's and depression, and, as mentioned, can even be lethal. Supplements are not FDA regulated, so purity and potency cannot be guaranteed. Be careful!
