A member asked:

I have high ammonia in my blood with past liver issues (high enzymes) my gastroenterologist is sending me to a neurologist instead why could that be?

Rule out other: If your liver issues are past, or they are only elevated enzymes and no cause was ever found, then i'm surprised that your ammonia remains elevated. If you have symptoms referable to the nervous system, your gastroenterologist may need an opinion as to whether they are hepatic encephalopathy or a different neurologic disease. I wish you good luck and hope for the best.

Please see below: High ammonia levels (due to liver problems) can cause your brain to not work right-hepatic encephalopathy. A neurologist can check to see if there are signs this is occurring . If it is, then treatment can be started. Even if it isn't occurring, having a baseline to compare to can be helpful in monitoring how you are doing. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor her/his reasons for referring you.
