Cardiac shunt: A patent formen ovale/pfo is a connection between the two upper heart chambers, where a shunt (flow) exists. Depending on how much flow (how big the hole), you might have symptoms, like fatique. Okay to ask your doc to show you pictures of your heart, and tell you how big the shunt is. It is scary to get such a diagnosis, but please know your pfo has been with you since birth.

Common finding: Patent foramen ovale is found as an incidental finding in about 25% of adults and is typically a benign incidental finding. It is highly unlikely to be causing your symptoms.
