Lumbar disk: Most disk herniations (slipped disk) will heal without surgery. Unfortunately healing can take up to 2 years. Weight control and core strengthening are the mainstay of treatment. Steroid injections for associated leg pain (sciatica) may be indicated. Surgery for persistent leg pain or leg weakness will decrease healing time. Back pain symptoms are common, but don't respond as well to surgery.
