? prophylactic ?: Seizure medications are often given following brain surgery as a prophylactic treatment. It is unclear whether it is appropriate. Acute seizures due to injury may not result in long term epilepsy. Six months of treatment is appropriate, then assess whether further treatment is necessary. This would involve good neurological evaluation and appropriate testing by a good neurologist.

Opinions may vary: Some neurologists and neurosurgeons tend to routinely use anti-epileptic drugs for any acute or subacute brain lesion, but if you had one seizure already, there is risk of additional events. Suggest you take Keppra (levetiracetam) for about 6-12 months, have a followup eeg at that point, and if normal, your exam also normal, maybe taper off over 3 months. If eeg is abnormal, risk is far higher & stay on meds.

Depends on location: The time to begin tapering is somewhat dependent on the size and location of the hemorrhage. Hemorrhages located at the gray/white junction of brain tissue are more likely to be site of seizures than those hemorrhages confined to the white matter or basal ganglia and require longer treatment. Your neurosurgeon or neurologist would have the best estimate based on imaging studies.
