A 52-year-old member asked:
Is it safe to take prevacid (lansoprazole) for a long period of time?
2 doctor answers • 4 doctors weighed in

Dr. Sidney Vinson answered
Gastroenterology 27 years experience
Yes: Long term use of ppis such as Prevacid (lansoprazole) has been associated with an increase risk of pneumonia in the elderly and an increase risk of bone fracture in older women. It can theorhetically cause malabsorption of b12, calcium and iron. Supplimenting these is probably adequate to prevent these complications. As always, you should discuss the risks and benefits of all medications with your doctor.

On lansoprazole, worried about side effects?

Dr. William Lizarraga answered

Few: Really don't need to worry too much about side effects. They're few and long term use can lead to problems such as osteoporosis and a slight increased risk of certain types of infection. Generally, though, these are quite safe.

Probably: Proton pump inhibitors are generally quite safe to take the long-term. There have been some increasing associations with pneumonia and other infections, perhaps it can weak bones (osteoporosis), but mostly these are safe. The real question is do you really need this medication for years?

Is there any way to get discounted prevacid (lansoprazole) solutabs?

Dr. Alfredo Garcia answered

Prevacid (lansoprazole): Prevacid now comes in generic form (lansoprazole) which is cheaper. I was just advised by a pharmacist that solutab has been on back order or discontinued.
