A member asked:

My 4months old baby has a blood stain in the eye, close to the pupil, what is the cause and how can i treat it?

Probably a bruise: If your baby is acting normally without eye rubbing, no mattering or discharge from the eye, then the red spot is likely a bruise (subconjunctival hemorrhage). A bruise generally results from rubbing the eye too hard. It usually disappears on its own without treatment. Did it just occur, or has it been there awhile? If the latter is true, you should have your baby examined for other causes.

Red eye: If it is in the white of the eye it will resolve on its own. It may haven been caused by a harsh cough , excessive crying, or perhaps the baby rubbing rubbing her eye as well. A tiny blood vessel in the eye was traumatized causing the bleeding or red spot.
