Likely a virus: Viral upper respiratory tract infections are very common right now, more common than the flu that is in the news. This virus affects the upper respiratory tract, not the lung tissue itself. It is self-limiting, does not require antibiotics, and can best be treated by the use of over the counter medications sudafed may be helpful in drying up the nasal passage.
