Can you have a kidney transplant while you are pregnant?

Specializes in Transplant Surgery

Not during pregnancy: Kidney transplants are only performed when a patient is in a very stable condition since dialysis is available as a life sustaining treatment. However, pregnancy is very rare among kidney failure patients and this circumstance is highly unlikely to occur unless the pregnancy has itself caused kidney failure. If that happens, the patient has too much to handle all at once physically + emotionally.

Possible : It is possible but not recommended at all. All the procedures and the medications could potentially adversely affect a pregnancy. Dialysis would be a better choice during pregnancy if needed.
