What role does iron play in our body and why do we need it?

Helps carry oxygen: Iron is essential for transferring oxygen in the body. The majority of it is in hemoglobin, the compound in red cells that makes them red. It picks up oxygen in the lungs and delivers it throughout the body for use in producing energy. A similar compound in muscle, myoglobin, accepts, stores, and releases oxygen when needed. A small amount is used for energy production in most cells as well.
