Chest pain: Pleurisy causes severe knife-like pain in the chest with breathing. The location and severity depend on where and how large an area of lung lining ("pleura") is irritated or infected. The pain comes from movement of the lung surface against the inside lining of the chest, so taking tiny breaths will cause less pain than taking big deep breaths.
