Rest: A bruise to the chest wall can be painful and take some time to heal. Ibuprofen may help ease the pain some. You may also try icing the injured area. Most of all, he just needs time to rest and let the injury heal. If he has trouble breathing, or any severe symptoms, you might want to take him to his physician to be checked out.

Shldr pads protect: Assuming your son was wearing approved shoulder pads that were between the facemask and your son's chest, the force generated from a similar sized child should be more than adequately dissipated by the shoulder pads and negate risk of serious injury. He may complain of some surface pain consistent with a bruise, but even this should resolve steadily in 1-2 days- team doc, dad for 2 young fb kids.
