A member asked:

Im prescribed antibiotics & prednisone for chronic sinusitis, i don't want to take the prednisone, would tylenol (acetaminophen) work just as well?

Not really: The Prednisone that you were prescribed is not necessary for treatment for your chronic sinusitis. It was given to you to help reduce the symptoms of sinusitis, such as pain and inflammation in your sinuses. Tylenol (acetaminophen) would not work as well since it is not an anti-inflammatory. You can take Ibuprofen or Naproxen instead of the prednisone, if you don't have any contraindications to those medications.

No: The Prednisone was prescribed to cause immediate decrease in the inflammation of the sinuses (and polyps) as well as the sinuses do not have great blood penetration, and the Prednisone can help to allow the antibiotic to work due to the decreased resistance of inflammation. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is not an anti-inflammatory.
